June 2003 Issue

Work on the museum is continuing. We have completely cleaned the building, brought in cabinets to display the artifacts and did many improvements including a deck for the front. The banner from the 1978 Centennial Celebration was hung in the museum. We have yet to complete the transfer of artifacts to the museum and add the skirting to the outside. The lawn will be worked on as soon as the weather permits. Please come and join us on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 to 9:00, July 9th and 16th. Some of the members will be working on various projects on other days. So, if you are free and see activity in that area, stop to help.

The pageant "A River Runs Beside It" written by Saralee Hoselton is coming along. Performances are July 17 at 7:00 pm and July 19 and 20 at 2:00 pm at the school gymnasium. If you are interested in helping with the pageant, we will be making sets and practicing at 7:30 pm at the school gym on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Many helping hands will be needed!

A writing seminar, "Hands on Fiction" by Lauraine Snelling will be given at H. G. Johnson Memorial Hall, 105 Almeron Avenue, on Friday, July 18 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm with a catered lunch for a cost of $25.00. The seminar is open to everyone from age 12 and up with registration due by July 14. Lauraine Snelling is an award winning author of over 40 books, both fiction and non-fiction for adults and young adults. These include DAKOTA and the RED RIVER OF THE NORTH and the RETURN TO RED RIVER series, which depict North Dakota's Red River Valley.

A presentation and book signing by Ms. Snelling will be held Friday evening, July 18, 7:00 pm at the H. G. Johnson Memorial Hall at a cost of $5.00. Most of Lauraine's books will be available for purchase after her presentations, including her most recent, RUBY. Personal books may also be brought in for her autograph. She will be available for book signing Saturday at the Ox Cart Trails Museum. These events are sponsored by Ox Cart Trails Historical Society and are supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Area churches and organizations are encouraged to have available their cookbooks and history books at the museum for the public to purchase. Call one of the officers of the Society if your organization is interested.
