Riverfest 2003

Drayton’s 125th Anniversary Celebration
DHS All Class Reunion – Drayton Riverfest
July 17-20, 2003

Pageant

As an official part of Drayton’s 125th Anniversary celebration, the Society commissioned an original historical pageant for the Drayton school stage. The pageant, written and directed by Saralee Hoselton and called A River Runs Beside It, was a sweeping, dramatic commemoration of the area’s history. It proved to be a real favorite for folks who attended.

Lauraine Snelling appearances

We were proud once again to host a series of appearances by noted author Lauraine Snelling as part of Drayton’s annual summer celebration. Ms. Snelling wrote the award-winning Red River of the North series about the adventures and hardships of fictional Norwegian immigrant family members struggling to make a new life for themselves in the Red River Valley. She held a fiction writing seminar entitled “Hands On Fiction,” gave a talk for the public, rode in the parade, and signed books. Red River of the North and many of her other works were available for purchase through the Society before and during Riverfest, which was a good moneymaker.

Quilt Raffle

A quilt was made and raffled as a fundraising project. The hand-made one-of-a-kind quilt featured panels with copies of various historical photographs. Drawing was held during intermission of the last performance of the pageant and the lucky winner was Carol McConnell from Colorado.

Parade float

We also entered a float in the Riverfest parade again. A reproduction ox cart was borrowed and placed on a trailer; members of the cast of A River Runs Beside It rode the float.
